Save children with cancer from Covid-19
Children with cancer are at risk of coronavirus infection and need double protection. Due to the pandemic, the need for sterility and protection of young cancer patients and their doctors has increased tenfold.
Healthcare systems around the world were not prepared for the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, especially vulnerable ones like Ukraine's. Healthy people can and should stay at home to save their own lives and the lives of others. Children with cancer cannot stay at home because the aggressive disease can kill them quickly. Kids need to continue their treatment and at the same time protect themselves from coronavirus infection, because a suppressed immune system will not protect them.
We are launching an emergency assistance program to provide the National Cancer Institute, the Institute of Neurosurgery, and the Western Ukrainian Specialized Children's Medical Center with additional protection, including respirator masks, disinfectants, protective suits and gowns, gloves, and other urgent needs. Everything necessary to ensure that seriously ill children survive the pandemic and the risk of COVID-19 spread is minimized.
In addition, we already have evidence of delays in key supplies to oncology departments, even chemotherapy, due to logistical difficulties. The lack of such drugs means stopping treatment, and stopping treatment means death. We will procure the medicines needed to continue treatment for patients who cannot wait.
Let's save the most vulnerable together!
