It's when what you put your soul into doesn't just work, it shows results🙏🧡
This is about the Pediatric Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant Clinic @ WUSCMC, which was opened on the eve of the war by the joint efforts of Zaporuka and our permanent Italian partner Soleterre Onlus and with the financial support of the Italian foundation Rosa Pristina.
The great news is that for the first time Lviv doctors have successfully removed stem cells from a child. These cells should help 4-year-old Maxim. He is treated for neuroblastoma. After high-dose chemotherapy, they will speed up recovery.
The little hero was not afraid at all, he was obedient and courageous. The procedure, according to experts, was very successful.
The preparation of the young patient lasted for 5 days. Doctors expected the maximum number of cells in the blood. Then there was the sampling process with a special Amicus separator. It filters blood like a sieve - takes stem cells from it and returns it.
5 hours, 6 cycles, 3 volumes of circulating blood - and doctors received enough material. It was frozen and placed in a special storage with liquid nitrogen. The collected material will be stored in a cryobank at -196 ° C until the child is ready for transplantation.
Now Maksim is at home, but he has to return to the clinic soon. Here, in special sterile boxes, the boy will undergo specialized treatment: high-dose chemotherapy and bone marrow transplantation.
"We are the only children's clinic in western Ukraine that has a ready team and modern capabilities to collect stem cells for bone marrow transplantation. And we are doing this effectively despite the ongoing war," said Roman Kizyma, head of the clinic.
"Zaporuka" is proud to be a guarantor of change in the country for the lives of Ukrainian children 🧡
