Bone marrow transplantation can be autologous (from the patient's own cells) or allogenic (from the donor). In the case of autologous transplantation, a patient with blood cell separator isolate healthy stem cells. While chemotherapy lasts (sometimes for several weeks), these cells need to be safely stored. This is why we use cryostorage - special equipment that ensures the preservation of biomaterial in its original form.
What does the cryostorage store?
-
patients' stem cells;
-
tumor cells - for further research;
-
girls' eggs to preserve reproductive function.
Unique equipment to save lives
Thanks to joint efforts with partners Soleterre Onlus and Fondazione Rosa Pristina, the Zaporuka Foundation purchased innovative cryostorage at a cost UAH 2.5 million for a new bone marrow transplantation unit in Western Ukrainian Specialized Children's Medical Center in Lviv (WUSCMC).
With the opening of the cryostorage facility, the PFVMCC becomes one of the few institutions in Ukraine to store vital biomaterial according to the most modern standards. This is a huge step forward in the treatment of oncological and oncohematological diseases in children.
We are sincerely grateful to our partners for their faith in the future of Ukrainian medicine. Together we save lives and make modern treatment available to children from all over Ukraine.
