Physical rehabilitation - effective support for children and adults during treatment

Physical rehabilitation key stage recoveryespecially for children with cancer and patients with war trauma.

З 2008 year, we have been developing the field of physical therapy at the National Cancer Institute. During this time, we have opened rehabilitation rooms, supported the work of physical therapists, and launched specialized projects. Every year, hundreds of children return to activity thanks to the work of the Foundation's physical therapists.

У 2022 year, we expanded our assistance in the area of rehabilitation. We joined the creation of rehabilitation centers "Unbroken" and "Unbroken Kids" for patients with injuries and burns. У 2024 in the year we strengthened this area and provided support to rehabilitation departments in hospitals Kyiv, Lviv and Dnipro. We help with renovating spaces, purchasing equipment, developing modern protocols, and training specialists. Together with our partners, we are systematically improving rehabilitation in Ukraine.

Changes that are already having an impact:

Renovated the inclusive space
The Pediatric Oncology Department has created comfortable and accessible conditions for children with limited mobility: three renovated wards with inclusive bathrooms, a new bright psychologist's office, and a spacious hall with a play area and physical therapy.

We purchased modern equipment:
interactive MYRO system, a motorized med for training legs and arms, a stepper escalator, an ergotherapy table and armrest, obstacle courses, a dumbbell row, balancers and step platforms.

We provide psychological support for the team
We organize sessions with psychologists for the multidisciplinary team of the Department of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine. Specialists are trained in self-care practices and methods that help them maintain their resources when working with patients.

We train medical specialists
Specialists have been certified to use the MYRO system Supported training for physical therapists on Physical Therapy for Back and Low Back Pain in Oncology Patients and participated in a training on examination and rehabilitation strategies after spinal cord injury.

Together with our partners, we are developing affordable and high-quality rehabilitation that facilitates the difficult path of treatment and recovery for patients. Our goal is to make rehabilitation an integral part of cancer care in Ukraine.

"Rehabilitation in Oncology: Moving Toward Recovery"

The project aims to develop integrated, patient-centered cancer rehabilitation in Ukraine. It includes 2 key directions:

  1. analyzing existing experience and assessing the needs of professionals and patients in Ukraine and familiarizing themselves with international practices,
  2. strengthening the professional capacity of specialists in the field of oncology rehabilitation.

Why is it important?

Rehabilitation is an integral part of the oncology care: it helps to reduce complications, restore functional status and improve the quality of life of patients. However, in Ukraine, rehabilitation care in oncology is hardly integrated into the treatment process, and there are critically few specialized specialists.

Currently, there is no systematic data on how many

  • What percentage of cancer patients receive rehabilitation services,
  • how rehabilitation care is organized within individual hospitals, regions and the country,
  • what is the experience of specialists and patients

To fill this gap Zaporuka Charitable Foundation together with CF "Patients of Ukraine", All-Ukrainian Association of Physical Therapists (APT) and Health Sciences Research Foundation (HSRF) launched an initiative to analyze the state of rehabilitation in oncology and develop human resources.
