How we helped patients with mine-blast injuries
Context.
Over the years of full-scale war, thousands of Ukrainians have been injured, many of them children. Among the most severe cases are combined mine-blast injuries. They require complex treatment, long-term rehabilitation, and support from an experienced team of doctors and psychologists. Before the war, the rehabilitation system in Ukraine was simply not ready for such a scale and complexity.
How we responded to the challenge
To support the wounded Ukrainians, the Zaporuka Foundation team has strengthened its rehabilitation program. In early 2024, in partnership with the Italian organization Soleterre we launched the project "Strengthening the capacity of medical institutions in Kyiv, Lviv, and Dnipro". The project was funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS). The aid was implemented on the basis of 4 medical institutions in Kyiv, Lviv and Dnipro:
- Okhmatdyt National Children's Hospital
- The first medical association in Lviv,
- City Clinical Hospital №4 DMC (Dnipro)
- Regional Medical Center for Family Health of the Dnipro Regional Council.
What we did during the project period
-
3334 patients were treated in hospitals in Kyiv, Lviv and Dnipro.
-
Purchased equipment by more than UAH 22 million, medicines and consumables - by almost UAH 8 million.
-
Conducted reconstruction of the Department of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine at the Regional Medical Center for Family Health of the Dnipro Regional Council.
-
On "Dachas" lived and underwent rehabilitation in Lviv 82 patients with their families, 167 in Kyiv.
-
We have provided more than 6047 psychological consultations in hospitals and even more 3100 - via the hotline.

Development of rehabilitation through training of specialists
To ensure that medical care remains of high quality for a long period of time, it is necessary not only to strengthen hospitals with equipment, but also to enable specialists to acquire life-saving skills and knowledge. Over the course of the project:
- 20 Ukrainian doctors and physical therapists completed an internship in Italy - in a clinic Montecatone and at the children's hospital Bambino Gesù in Rome.
- More 22 specialists completed an online course on clinical guideline development, created for Ukrainians by experts from Bologna in cooperation with Cochrane Italy.
- Join the organization All-Ukrainian Congress of Physical Therapists in Lviv and Rehabilitation in Pediatrics conference in Kyiv.
We thank our partners for their trust and cooperation! Together, we not only strengthened individual hospitals, but also took confident steps to strengthen the system and were there for those who needed it.
