We often tell the stories of the children we help because we share the opinion that all the examples of our wards are about courage and the value of life. These are also stories about how different charity is, because good deeds are not just about buying medicines or greeting the New Year in the ward. Charity is about constant steps towards quality results and real change.
Today we share one of them. Vika Vaipan finished her treatment in early 2020. Back then, she underwent 2 surgeries because there was a tumor on one leg and a metastasis on the other. Vika was remembered by rehabilitation specialists as the girl who could not get on crutches and gradually learn to walk for the longest time after the operation. At first, it was difficult for her to believe in her own strength and trust the rehabilitators, but now the patient's gait is almost smooth and without crutches.
Vika's remission lasted 10 months, but at the next examination, doctors found metastases in her lungs. She was scheduled for surgery and rehabilitation afterwards. Now Vika is gradually regaining her strength and enjoys doing breathing exercises and practicing on the motorized medicine, because every exercise is a guarantee of free movement in the future.
For more than ten years, the rehabilitation specialists of our foundation have been helping the patients of the Cancer Institute to adapt to the transformations of their bodies and work on every muscle to restore the mobility they had before the surgery.
And it is thanks to our joint work that up to 100 children like Vika receive proper assistance every year.
Physical rehabilitation of children with cancer who have undergone surgery to remove a bone tumor or the bone itself is an integral part of our activities. Depending on the diagnosis and the situation, the bone affected by cancer can be replaced with a donor bone or an endoprosthesis, which allows for full movement in the future. Unfortunately, sometimes the limb has to be amputated. But no matter what changes occur in the body of a young patient, rehabilitation helps them adapt to them and get used to their new body.
Vika continues to fight for her life, and we, in particular our rehabilitation therapists, help her in this. The specialists work conscientiously with young patients, rejoice with them at every angle of the knee bend and the first steps after surgery. This is possible only thanks to caring benefactors and regular partners - the Soleterre organization and the Gyniansky Family Memorial Foundation.
