On May 27, specialists of the Western Ukrainian Specialized Children's Medical Center had the opportunity to talk with colleagues from Italy about the prevention and treatment of infections in patients who have undergone bone marrow transplantation.
According to statistics, infection is the cause of death in about 30% patients in the first 100 days after autotransplantation, when the patient is the donor. There should be a maximum level of sterility around the child, because during the transplantation, the bone marrow is first "killed" by chemotherapy, after which the patient has no resistance to infections.
Zoryana Kyzyma, pediatric oncologist, about the meeting:
"I am sincerely grateful to our colleagues from Italy for their willingness and opportunity to share their experience in the field that we are just starting in our medical center. The information on specific infections that need to be prevented in the post-transplant period, as well as recommendations on the possibility of vaccinating patients against SAR-CoV-2 after TKM, is extremely valuable."
The meeting was held within the framework of the project to establish a bone marrow transplantation unit at the Western Ukrainian Specialized Children's Medical Center in Lviv with the support of the Zaporuka Charitable Foundation and Italian partners Fondazione Rosa Pristina and Soleterre Onlus.
