The Zaporuka Charitable Foundation purchased a blood cell separator worth UAH 1.7 million for Western Ukrainian Specialized Children's Medical Center in Lviv. This equipment is the heart of the future Bone marrow transplantation department, which is currently under construction.
This is the first device of this type in the Western region of Ukraine for a children's medical institution.
During transplantation, it is not bone marrow that is transplanted, but stem cells, which are most often obtained from peripheral blood. This is exactly what a separator is for:
The device takes stem cells from the donor's blood,
the blood is returned to the body after purification,
The cells are stored in special bags for further use.
During transplantation, these cells simply are introduced into the patient's bodylike a regular transfusion. They find bone marrow on their own, multiply and start vital functions.
Project customer - fund "Zaporuka"who has been helping children with cancer for 12 years.
Partners - Italian funds "Rosa Pristina" and "Soleterre".
The department is being equipped:
boxes with laminar air flow and HEPA filtration,
room for bone marrow sampling,
technical rooms for the equipment.
Patients after transplantation will be kept in sterile conditions from 30 to 120 days.
Also purchased blood plasma and stem cell defrosting - is another critical transplant equipment.
In the future, the department will will accept up to 12 children annuallyFor whom transplantation will be a chance for life.
We are sincerely grateful to all our partners, donors and volunteers who make it possible to treat childhood cancer at the highest level in Ukraine. Together we save lives.
